AFTER CESAIRE/Modern Tropiques, curated by internationally published art critic Aindrea Emelife, brings together Black British contemporary artists to explore the idea of a collective consciousness within diasporic art production, proposing the surrealist parlour game ‘Exquisite Corpse’ as lens through which we can connect these diverse practices.

This group exhibition pays homage to the work of Martiniquian authors Aimé and Suzanne Césaire, whose 40s journal Tropiques articulated a Modernist-influenced anti-colonial stance. Suzanne Césaire proclaimed this project, since referred to as afro-Surrealism, as ‘a permanent readiness for The Marvellous’.

Exhibiting artists: Phoebe Collings-James, Adelaide Damoah, Michaela Yearwood-Dan, Rachel Jones, James Massiah & Irvin Pascal.
