For the second year running, Free Range will present the FR Awards solo exhibitions at The Old Truman Brewery from 1st– 4 th February 2018. In partnership with Metro Imaging, Art Fund, the British Journal of Photography and Elephant magazine, three winners have been hand-picked from a new generation of cutting-edge talent from across the UK to create new work that will go on display in three solo exhibitions.
Jersey-born photographer Alexander Mourant will be exhibiting his new series Aomori, named after the Japanese word for “blue forest”. Aomori compiles photographs taken on his recent trip to Japan and combines two existential ideas: the forest and the nature of the colour blue. The exhibition is supported using public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England and ArtHouse Jersey.
Manny Melotra is a photographer from West London who has focused on documenting his local area of Southall. Exploring the disconnection and complex nature of multiple diverse communities living together, Manny’s first solo exhibition The Broadway captures themes of migration, alienation, religion, hybridity and austerity.
Multiplicity is a collective made up of two artists, Jessica Thomas and Clive Kudakwashe Timothy. Together, through a digital and performance based practice, they create a response to issues on appropriation, colonialism and equality through engaging and futuristic videos. In their new exhibition Psycho Sensual Time Traveling Television Drama, Multiplicity will explore themes of futurism, gender, class and technology, as well as posthuman, post-earth and post-dimensions.
The FR Awards were launched in 2016 to continue the support of emerging artists and celebrate talent. The awards provide winners with funding toward their own solo exhibitions at the Old Truman Brewery in February, alongside mentorship and press in the lead up to their shows. Three artists are selected across the two Photography and Fine Art weeks by a panel of industry experts and professionals within the arts, including curators, artists themselves, press and gallerists.
The winners of the FR Awards 2016 exhibited their first solo shows to the public in February 2017 at The Old Truman Brewery. Photographers Eva Abeling and Katharina Halser and fine artist Dylan Fox exhibited new works in three separate and simultaneous shows, with themes ranging from gender dysphoria to the experience of undertaking 71 operations.
