We are very excited to host the award winning artist and illustrator George Butler who will tell us about his experience of covering warzones with pen and ink.

George’s career has taken him to refugee camps in the Bekaa Valley, the oil fields in Azerbaijan, a neo-Nazi murder trail in Munich, an oil rig in the north sea, a Ghanian gold mine, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Gaza… the list goes on.

In this talk George will be focusing on his recent trip to Mosul, at a time when Daesh were holding several hundred thousand civilians hostage in the city. In April 2017 George was part of a military convoy which redirected the Emergency Response Divisions attention from the frontline in Mosul, to the city to Badoush. The hope was that the deadlock between ISIS and the Iraqi military units would be broken. These drawings exhibit a small section the frontline fighting with the Golden Division while also exploring life in some of the liberated areas of west Mosul despite the abhorrent conditions.
