Sleep Rock is the first solo exhibition in the UK by New-York based artist Sadie Benning (b. 1973, Wisconsin, USA). The exhibition’s title evokes a dual condition that brings tangible matter into contact with a dream state in which memory, vision and association converge.
Benning’s work speculates on an aesthetic sphere uninhibited by fixed categories, in which images are always read next to, through or over one another. Installed sequentially in the galleries, the new works produced especially for this exhibition, read with a filmic register – frame by frame – apprehended from a distance or seen in detail close-up.
